Over 40 Franklin students are attending the Portland Literary Arts author event: Sebastian Junger, Journalist and Academy Award nominee, on Thursday evening 2/23/12. Some will post their reflection of the event HERE. Others will be adding to the Twitter Feed at hashtag #fhsauthors. Check out their responses after the event.

SLAM DUNK! Thanks to SUN school for offering the Slam Poetry Workshops with DeLuxtheLight Feb 28-April 10. Students will polish and practice pieces to perform at the FHS Poetry Slam on April 17. Cash prizes include $100 first place! Winners go on to Verselandia April 25.

The Toolbox now has even more! We have added a College and Career Prep Page (Classroom Connections> For Everyone & On the Success-Avid Tools) with lots of supports and practice tests. We also have lots more Math Support Links at our Math page (Classroom Connections) and on our Instructional Resources: Math page (Teacher Resources). There is also one of my favorite new sites for creating a facebook page for fictional or historical figures. My Fake Wall (I will put this on our Technology Tools page)

To celebrate Teen Reads Week students at FHS will sign up in advance to spend the morning of Wed. Oct. 26th reading in the library for the fun of it. All PPS high schools will be participating in a Read In on the same date. We will have our Read In from 8:15 – 10:25 a.m. Comfy furniture + juice and muffins + a good book = Read In. Any questions, feel free to contact Jan Donald, Librarian.

MCPL Teen Author –Matt de La Pena is speaking for FREE On October 17, 2011, at 7 p.m. at the Slavic Church Emmanuel, 2025 S.E. 82nd Ave., near S.E. Division. Matt de la Peña, is the author of the novels Ball Don’t Lie, Mexican Whiteboy, We Were Here, I Will Save You, and the picture book A Nation’s Hope: The Story of Boxing Legend Joe Louis, with art by Kadir Nelson. Check out the very cool movie site for Ball Don’t Lie. FHS Library has copies of his books too! Space is limited, and seats will be available on a first-come first-served basis, so plan to arrive early. Congratulations to Pam Garrett and Kate Moore who were awarded grants that will allow selected students to attend a special morning event with Matt on October 17.
