His memoir, The Color of Water: A Black Man’s Tribute to his White Mother was on the New York Times bestseller list for two years.  His debut novel, Miracle at St. Anna was made into a movie by Spike Lee. His latest novel The Good Lord Bird won the 2013 National Book Award for fiction. Ann Patchett calls the book “the most electric, provocative, and funny (I mean really funny) book I’ve read in years.” It is a novel disguised as a memoir about a black boy who pretends to be a girl as he escapes his owner to join the glbabolitionist revolutionary, John Brown.   Excerpts and books also available in the library!
